First hang in the Warbonnet Hammock

I just received my new hammock, a Warbonnet Blackbird, and I went straight out to setup it up at a local national park. I thought the rain has passed, but I was wrong.  I ended up getting a good rain test in and I can say my water lines worked great and I was dry the whole night.

It sleeps different than the Eno, but I found it way more comfortable. But I need to work on how level the hammock is, as I kept sliding down.

But it was a great night and I am looking forward to the next outing.

Another good hike

I did a quick 8 mile hike today to finish off my section hike of the Tuxacani trail in Mississippi.  I decided to see how my feet and footwear will handle wet shoes. I hike about 2 miles in wet Merrel Moabs after I dunked my feet in a creek.  Then I put on a old  pair of tennis shoes and put them in a lake.  The. I hiked about 1.5 miles in those.  Wow it is a big difference.  Shoes dried out way faster than my goretex, they didn't hold water, and they are much lighter. I think I am off to buy some proper trail runners.

I did finally find the springs around here, and sadly it was just a nasty hole with water since nothing was flowing.

A few good things came out of today.
- Perthamiam is awesome I didn't have one bug bother me today
- learned how to wear my watch without it bothering me
-wool underwear seems to be working nicely, we'll see how my thighs feel in the morning though.
- I learned how to properly tie the shoes laces on my shoes so I don't get any heal slip

Trying out the Chacos

I heard a crazy person talk about doing long hikes in a pair of Chaco sandals.  Then I kept seeing other comments online mentioning Chacos so I decided to try some out.

I did 9 miles of trail for the test.  I had a few water crossings and plenty of sand and mud to test in.  Pretty much the sandals held up well and I your feet are going to get wet anyways, might as well have wear something that will dry fast.

I wore a pair of bicycle socks with the sandals to prevent any chaffing.  Everything worked well.  Only problem I had was dirt would build up below my toes on my left foot.  I soon learned how to quickly shake it out.

It's a litte worrisome to have exposed toes but I didn't have any trouble, but I need to hike where there are rocks and boulders to make sure though.

Our First Pinhoti Trip

We started off a little late due to the heavy fog that stayed a little too long in the morning. We camped overnight in Cheaha State park, and drove to the trailhead in the morning. We came up on McDill point, and I forgot completely about the outlook trail. But we did see part of the plane.

We meet a few people on trails and a few boy scouts, but after the connector trail we didn't see anyone until the next day.

Heaven was an amazing view and well worth the extra mileage.

We camped out at the first camping spot down the Nubbin creek trail, it was a nice spot and no ants.

The following morning we ran into some other campers next to the Mills Shoal creek and continued our way back to the car on the Cave Creek trail. We missed the cave though, maybe next time.

Also lots of these flowers where in bloom all over the trail.

All in All it was a wonderful trip and we are already planning our next trip.

TuffBurg - 7 out of 11 ain't bad.

My frist mountain bike race of 2011 was Tuffburg. I'm way better than I was last year, but I wanted to be a little behind the pack. I need to improve my time by about 8 min to get when I want to do be. I got 7th out of 11. Its a good start to the year, and I look forward to the rest of the season.
